Yetenaweg Book Club

Yetena Weg's Book Club was established with a clear purpose: to complement medical education by exposing healthcare professionals and students to diverse perspectives that shape compassionate, well-rounded practitioners.

Through curated literature, we aim to:

(1) develop empathy by exploring human experiences beyond clinical settings; (2) enhance critical thinking through analysis of complex themes; (3) foster discussions about ethical dilemmas in medicine; and (4) cultivate resilience by examining stories of adversity and triumph. Our ultimate goal is to bridge the gap between technical medical knowledge and the humanistic qualities essential for exceptional patient care, while building a community of lifelong learners who appreciate the transformative power of literature.

These selections - spanning memoir, fiction, and medical literature - were carefully chosen to provoke discussion on themes directly relevant to healthcare professionals' personal and professional development. By engaging with these works, members gain not just knowledge, but wisdom to navigate medicine's human dimensions.

Building on the success of our Book Club, we are preparing a specially curated reading list for premedical students, designed to introduce them to the humanistic dimensions of medicine early in their educational journey. This selection will include foundational texts that explore empathy, ethics, resilience, and the societal context of healthcare essential qualities for future physicians. The list will be formally submitted to medical school deans and the Ministry of Health, proposing its integration into premedical curricula or recommended extracurricular reading. By doing so, we aim to foster a generation of medical professionals who appreciate not only the science of medicine but also its art and humanity. This initiative reflects our commitment to holistic medical education and our belief that exposure to diverse perspectives from the very beginning of training creates more compassionate, thoughtful, and well-rounded healthcare providers.
